The unwritten rules
SKATEPARK
ETIQUETTE
Banchory Skatepark is an extreme-sports arena, and we want everyone to be safe. There's a sign at the entrance with the official rules — and then there's the stuff every skater just knows. With a nod to skatehut.co.uk, here's our top ten.
- 01
Learn to skate first
As tempting as it is to dive straight in, get confident on the basics before you roll into the park. Know the basics and you'll be able to skate most medium-steep ramps.
- 02
Don't try to figure it out at rush hour
Learning? Come in the morning when kids are at school and adults are at work — you'll likely have the park to yourself. Late afternoons, early evenings and weekends are peak. If you're a beginner you may get in the way.
- 03
Respect each other
Kindness goes a long way. Skateboard, BMX, scooter or roller skates — everyone has an equal right to be here. Don't mock people of lower ability. Help, encourage, don't gatekeep. Everyone was once a beginner.
- 04
Keep the park clean
For some of us, this place is a second home. Don't litter, clean up after yourself. Look after the park and the park looks after you.
- 05
No snaking
We're not talking about reptiles. Don't recklessly cut the line. Wait your turn. Bowls, mini-verts and mini ramps are strictly one person at a time.
- 06
Shout 'BOARD!'
If you bail and lose your board, shout 'BOARD!' loud. Most people are concentrating on their own line, not watching out for a flying deck.
- 07
Ledges aren't benches
When you're resting, don't sit on the course. There are benches for spectators. And remember — the skatepark is NOT a playground. Supervise kids, no balance bikes, trikes or 3-wheeled scooters.
- 08
Wear your protection
It's not mandatory, but skating is a dangerous sport. We strongly recommend helmets, knee pads and full protective gear for everyone riding the park.
- 09
Just ask
"Can I drop in?" "Are you using this rail?" "Can I wax it?" "Wanna play SKATE?" "Can you show me how to ollie?" Polite, simple, and a great way to make friends.
- 10
Hype each other up
There's no better feeling than landing a trick you've worked on for weeks. Smack your board, shout, congratulate. Young, old, beginner, pro — that's what a skatepark is for.
A skatepark is a place where people meet to develop and share their passion — skateboarding, roller skating, BMX, scootering. Look out for each other, and we'll all keep rolling.
